Zendesk Support Administrator Certification
Zendesk runs formal exams, and the Zendesk Support Administrator certification is what almost everybody means by Zendesk certification. Here's what it tests.
The tracks, and which one you want
Certification and training are two different things at Zendesk. There is a large library of free on-demand learning, and separately there are paid, proctored exams that produce a credential. You can do all of the first and none of the second.
If you're an agent wondering which certification to take, the honest answer is none. Nothing on the exam will make you better at answering a customer.
What the Zendesk Support Administrator certification tests
Zendesk publishes an exam guide with the weighted domains, and it is worth reading before you book anything. Broadly, the exam covers the configuration surface an admin owns.
The questions lean scenario-shaped. You get a situation and four plausible configurations, and you pick the one that solves it without breaking something else. Rote memorisation of menu locations doesn't help much.
How to prepare, realistically
Six to eight weeks, an hour most days, if you already administer an instance. Longer if you do not.
Work through the free on-demand admin learning path first. It is more thorough than people expect and it maps closely onto the exam domains. Then get a place to break things: a trial account, or a sandbox if your plan includes one.
Then build. Not read, build. Create a trigger that notifies a group, then an automation that escalates after four hours, then watch them fight each other. Change a ticket field type and see what happens to your existing reports. Set up an SLA policy with business hours and then answer a ticket at 7pm to see what the clock does.
The exam rewards the person who has broken a trigger and had to work out why at half past four on a Friday.
Two weeks before the exam, read the exam guide again and mark the domains you have never touched in anger. That's your revision list. For most candidates it's SLAs, roles and the parts of Explore they've avoided.
Cost, retakes and expiry
Zendesk publishes the current exam fee, the delivery method and the retake policy on its training pages, and those change. Do not budget from a number you read somewhere else. Check the source, then add the cost of one retake, because a decent proportion of first attempts fail and it removes the pressure.
Certifications carry a validity period and need renewing. If you are getting certified because a client contract or a partner requirement demands it, diary the expiry the day you pass.
Is it worth it?
Consultants and implementation partners: yes. The badge is a sales asset, and partner programmes have their own requirements around certified staff. See Zendesk partners.
In-house admins: probably, for the studying rather than the certificate. Nobody at your company will check. What they will notice is that you stopped building six overlapping triggers, because the syllabus forced you to understand the model. That's the real return.
Job seekers moving between companies: it helps. It's a signal on a CV in a field with few formal qualifications.
Managers and agents: no. Spend the budget on Explore training for the lead instead, which changes more decisions per hour of study.
Frequently asked questions
What does being a Zendesk certified administrator involve?
Passing the Zendesk admin certification exam, which tests configuration rather than agent work. Becoming a Zendesk certified administrator means knowing triggers, automations, views, SLAs and permissions cold.
How hard is the Zendesk Support Administrator certification exam?
Fair if you have administered a live instance for a few months, hard if you have only clicked around the interface. The questions are scenario-based, so experience of configuration going wrong is worth more than reading.
What does Zendesk certification cost?
Zendesk publishes the current fee on its training pages and it changes, so check there rather than relying on a quoted figure. Budget for one retake while you're at it.
Does Zendesk certification expire?
Yes, credentials carry a validity period and need renewal. Put the expiry date in a calendar on the day you pass.
Can I pass without a live Zendesk instance?
It's possible using a trial, and it is harder. Several domains, particularly SLAs and business rule interaction, are much easier to answer if you have watched them misbehave on real tickets.
Is there a free Zendesk certification?
The on-demand training library is largely free. The certification exams themselves are paid and proctored, and the two are often confused.
The part no syllabus covers
No exam domain asks what to do about the same request arriving more than once. Ticket Merger handles that bit.
