Zendesk Training and Certification

A deep product with a real learning curve for admins and almost none for agents. Spend the training budget accordingly.

Who needs what

Agents. An afternoon with a colleague and a good macro library. Formal training is rarely the constraint on agent performance.
Admins. This is where training pays. Triggers, automations, macros, views, SLAs and business rules interact in ways that are genuinely hard to reason about from the interface alone.
Support leads. Reporting, specifically Explore. Most teams use a fraction of it because nobody was ever shown the model.

The formats

Zendesk offers free on-demand training, paid instructor-led courses, and certification exams for admins and specialists. Certifications carry a cost and an expiry.

The free on-demand material covers more than people expect. Work through it before paying for anything, because it often answers the question you were about to buy a course for.

What no course teaches

How to staff for your arrival curve. How to set a first response target you can hit on your worst week. Which of your tickets should never have existed.

That last one is the largest gap. No certification covers duplicate handling, and it is a tenth of the queue that a trained admin will configure beautifully and never question.

Frequently asked questions

Is Zendesk certification worth it?+

For admins and consultants, yes. For agents, an afternoon of shadowing is worth more.

Is Zendesk training free?+

A substantial amount of on-demand training is free. Instructor-led courses and certification exams are paid.

The lesson missing from the syllabus

Nobody teaches you to question the tickets themselves. A tenth of them are the same request arriving twice.
