Can You Unmerge a Ticket in Zendesk?

No. Zendesk merges are permanent. Here is what to do instead, and how to avoid needing this page again.

What "permanent" means here

When you merge in Zendesk, the closing ticket is set to closed and tagged `closed_by_merge`, and its most recent public comment is copied to the survivor. There is no reverse action in the agent interface and no API endpoint that undoes it.

The good news is that nothing is deleted. The closed ticket still exists with its full conversation, it is just closed and cross-linked. So "unmerging" in practice means rebuilding a working ticket, not recovering lost data.

What to do after a wrong merge

Three minutes of work, and the customer never needs to know.

1

Open the closed ticket

Search the ticket ID, or build a view on the `closed_by_merge` tag. The whole original conversation is still there.

2

Create a fresh ticket for the request that got buried

Copy the relevant conversation across, set the requester, and link back to the closed ticket in a private note so the history is traceable.

3

Fix the cause, not just this ticket

A wrong merge almost always means the matching was too loose. Tighten the requester rule or the similarity threshold, or move that pattern to suggest-only.

Why automatic merging is safer than it sounds

People assume software merging is riskier than a human doing it. In practice it's the opposite, because software applies the same rules every time and records why it acted.

A tired agent at 5pm merging two similar-looking tickets from different customers is the wrong merge that actually happens. Ticket Merger won't merge across requesters unless you tell it to, will not merge below your confidence threshold, and writes down the reason for every merge it makes.

And if you're not ready to trust it, run it in suggest mode permanently. Plenty of teams do.

Frequently asked questions

Is there any way to undo a Zendesk merge?+

No. There is no unmerge in the agent interface or the API. The closed ticket keeps its conversation, so you recreate rather than recover.

Where did the comments go?+

They stayed on the closed ticket. Only the most recent public comment is copied to the surviving ticket, which surprises people who expect a full conversation move.

How do I find every merged ticket?+

Build a view or search on the tag `closed_by_merge`. Zendesk adds it to every ticket closed by a merge.

Can Ticket Merger undo its own merges?+

It is the same native Zendesk merge, so the same limitation applies. That's exactly why the defaults are conservative and why suggest mode exists.

Merge with rules instead of hope

Set the matching once and every merge follows it, with a note on the ticket explaining exactly why it happened.
