Zendesk Translation and Multilingual Support

Zendesk translation covers four separate problems hiding inside the phrase we support several languages. They don't share an answer.

The four problems

The interface language each agent sees. It's a per-user setting, and the easy one.
Automated messages to customers: notifications, triggers, macros. That's what dynamic content is for.
Help centre articles, which support per-language versions under one article.
The conversation itself, where a customer writes in a language your agent doesn't read.

Dynamic content, briefly

Dynamic content lets you define a piece of text once, with a variant per language, then reference it by placeholder in triggers, automations and macros. Zendesk serves whichever variant matches the user language.

Do this before you scale automations. Retrofitting dynamic content into forty existing triggers is a genuinely miserable afternoon, and it's an entirely avoidable one.

Where Zendesk translation by machine is safe

Safe: understanding what an incoming ticket says, so you can route it to the right person.

Risky: sending a machine-translated reply on anything legal, financial, medical or emotionally charged. The words can be right and the tone still won't be. Customers can tell.

Most teams land in the middle. Translate to understand and route, then reply in a language you have actually got on the team.

The duplicate wrinkle

Multilingual queues produce a specific duplicate. The customer writes in their own language, waits, hears nothing quickly enough, then rewrites the whole thing in English because they assume that'll be faster.

Two tickets, one problem, almost no shared vocabulary. Requester and time-window matching catches it. Content matching on its own won't.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Zendesk ticket translation different from Guide translation?

Very. Zendesk Guide translation means published article versions you control, while Zendesk ticket translation is machine translation applied by an app to the conversation. Zendesk language translation of the interface itself is a third thing again, and it's built in.

How does Zendesk translation work?

Three separate mechanisms: dynamic content for your own strings, published translations of help centre articles, and machine translation applied to ticket text by an app. Only the first two are under your editorial control.

Can Zendesk translate tickets automatically?

Through apps and AI features, yes, for understanding. Sending the machine translation back to the customer is the part to be careful with, especially on sensitive topics.

How do I translate help centre articles?

Guide supports per-language versions of one article, and it serves whichever version matches the user language setting.

Same request, two languages

A customer who rewrites in English produces a duplicate with no shared words. Matching on identity and timing still finds it.
